| | | Home | | BYU CougarsBrigham Young University (BYU), located in Provo, Utah is a private coed research university owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormon Church. It has the 2nd. largest enrollment of private universities in the US with 34,000 students, 98% of whom are Mormon. The university traces its origins back to 1862. Formerly a member of the Western Athletic Conference it joined the new Mountain West Conference in 1999. The team name is Cougars, and Cosmo the Cougar has been the mascot since 1953. BYU has become a powerhouse in college football and is known for producing great quarterbacks. In 1984 the team went undefeated and won the national championship. In 1990 quarterback, Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy.
